WE ARE MORE SIMILAR THAN WE ARE DIFFERENT

The larger works "Thousand Faces",
came about after the concept of Joseph Campbell's book: "The hero
with Thousand Faces". Masks have played a significant role in rituals
for many civilisations; they embody the essence of naivety and spontaneity
which children carry with them. They are not only symbols of wisdom equal
to a higher being which connect us our ancestors, but also the direct
link to the essential guardians who keep us united

Many of the faces in the large panels are made from
'found object' collected from various sites and places and even the side
of the road. But each object, which is hand picked by Pierre, must inhabits
a unique aesthetic quality, which await a promise of rebirth. It is only
the refined eye of the artist, which recognises merit in such small things.
Pierre Cavalan is able to yield to these humble materials and transform
their utilitarian existence into works of art. Such a vision enables us
to shift our conception of these objects into another level of understanding.
These panels of faces represent humanity, tracing many aspects of human
emotion, which we all relate to.

His young family, Claire (11) and Luke (16) also fabricate
some of the faces.
The direct process of embossing, repoussage, texturing, hammering and
stamping metal is a perfect instantaneous means to translate the impression
of innocence and simplicity, contrasting so much with the intricate process
of fine Jewellery making
