Vans that have influenced my life :-)
From the first week that I owned Bessy the HiAce-Trakka, I new that it was very unlikely that I would own any other type of vehicle other than a van. They are just so convenient, it's like having an extra room on your house! For camping they are superlative! And for building they are a must.
Then once I owned Bazza the Daihatsu camper van that ran on chip oil, I knew it would be very unlikely that I would own any other type of engine other than a diesel!


What now? How is it going?
After buying my latest van 'Tetris', it became apparent that I didn't know that much about converting diesels to run on WVO.
However I have persevered, and the conversion is coming along just great.

Vans that have influenced my life :-)
1. Bessy... Named because she had similar properties as a 'Besser block' e.g.: shape, aerodynamics... performance.

She was my first van and I loved her, despite treating her very badly she lasted five years.
She took me on many camping trips & hauled almost all of my hoarded building materials up to the mountains.
Best $1000 I have ever spent.
  2. Doogle... The ex postie van, owned by Cindi. It had a lot of character and its own search engine...<link>   3. Zebbidy... Cindi's second van, but I have driven it so much I practically owned it for a while.  
  4. Bazza.... Named after bessie, was my first van to run on SVO.
Unfortunately it died on the Great Ocean Road due to a blown crank shaft bearing :-(
  5. Red Dwarf... Named for obvious reasons... I only had it for about a week.. pity, would have made a great camper.  
6. Tetris... Named because: That's what it looks like i'm playing, when I load and unload gear around all the other milk crates holding my food, clothes and other stuff I keep in it.
I've decked out the inside with a bed and power points to make life easier for my two days of work down in Sydney.
I have now successfully converted it to run on waste vegetable oil.

WVO Conversion
My HiAce van presented me with a few problems when it came to installing my conversion.

The first was:
Due to a lack of space under the van, I would have to install the tank inside.
Therefore heating the tank, and in-turn the inside of the van, would be a problem. For that reason I am going to try an unheated tank system with an inline heater.

The second problem is the lack of space inside the engine bay. Trying to find a spot for the valve is difficult... Maintenance is not going to be easy!
Putting the filter and heater in my fuel box was the simplest solution.

The third problem, was it all had to be finished by January for my trip to Adelaide!

First of all I installed my extra fuel tank which I scavenged out of my dead Bazza. I made a ply wood box to contain any spills.

  Well I found a spot for the valve.
With my physical installation complete, I decided that since I was heading to the Wolgan valley anyway, that would provide a great vibration test before I connect everything else.

Well the van seems to run on the SVO OK & the January deadline is well within my sights. I just have to filter about 800 liters of oil!

I set up this filter system in my tool shed. The idea is that I can pour in 30l at a time and it will filter down to fuel grade in one go.
First the pair of pants gets rid of all the chunky bits & filters down to 7(ish) microns.
Then its stored in the milk crate as it seeps through the one micron filter into my storage drums which I'll take on my trip.

After 1500 trouble free km's, my fuel pump started to leak (as expected due to it's old rubber seals). So I had it rebuilt with the proper nylon seals.
I suppose I was expecting this... What I wasn't expecting was for it to cost $900. And in addition to the predictable degradation of the rubber seals… There was a glue-like build up clogging the pump and so much carbon build up in the injectors, my mechanic said there were actually stalactites!

Something isn't right here....

After a much needed inspiring trip to visit Jason and his Mercedes 24D converted to run on SVO I decided to buy a temperature Gauge and do some testing.

My findings where a bit surprising: I found that my VegTherm inline heater was only heating my oil to about 50 Deg C. And by the time it went through the filter and got to the IP, it was only about 40-45 deg C.

;ooks like I need to do some serious redisigning if i'm going to be going on that trip in January......

Every now and then I will update this area, recording how many kilometers my van has traveled since the conversion, and also what percentage it has used WVO and diesel.

15/1/2007 to 27/1/2007

I just did a round trip to Addelaide, doing approximately 2500km. During the trip I only refilled my diesel tank once! All up I did 2000 km's on veggie oil over a two week period!

So far there haven't been any hiccups in the system.
